New HART field communicator offers complete wireless solution

Field Xpert operates with HART®/Bluetooth™ modem and WLAN (WiFi ™) supported networks. While other field communicators require a separate laptop or computer to access the internet, Device Descriptions (DDs) can be wirelessly downloaded straight to Field Xpert. The Field Xpert handheld then communicates to the field device modem via Bluetooth for fast, convenient commissioning and troubleshooting without cable length restrictions.
Offline configurations can be viewed with Field Xpert and downloaded later to the field device. The same data can be downloaded to multiple devices by simply changing the key reference or tag number reducing plant technician time in the field.
Speed and ease of use are key benefits of Field Xpert. Being an industrial PDA, Field Xpert is based on Microsoft Windows Mobile™ 6 and provides fast boot up and operation. It runs intuitive software tailored to the daily needs of field technicians. Special device functions such as Endress+Hauser’s envelope curves for time-of-flight level measurement devices, and automatic DD library repair are supported. Further applications for Plant Asset Management activities, such as maintenance and documentation, can also be installed using Endress+Hauser’s Asset Xpert software tool. A 3.5” transflective TFT colour screen allows Field Xpert to be used in bright sunlight and normal light while rich graphics display charts and graphs in an easy-to-read format.
On site, the Field Xpert software will automatically scan the HART network for devices. Alternatively, an address range can be fixed individually. All devices found in the selected range will appear in a search results list. The ‘Device type’, ‘address’, and ‘tag’ of each connected field device are shown, allowing for fast configuration and troubleshooting.
The compact Field Xpert device weighs only 550 g and has a rechargeable lithium ion battery to maximise time between charges. Robust shockproof casing offers protection from static electricity, dust and water and means Field Xpert can be used in hazardous areas. An intrinsically safe version is also available.
Field Xpert provides universal support for all HART devices and will soon be available for FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS PA and WirelessHART. Synchronisation with FieldCare to allow a further completion of Endress+Hauser’s Plant Asset Management solution will also be available in the near future.
